How Metahunter’s Participate-to-Earn is Changing the Game
Most people that are interested in blockchain technology are familiar with the concept of play-to-earn (P2E) gaming. There was a huge wave of these P2E platforms announced in the past year following the trends of Axie Infinity and other blockchain-based gaming experiences. However, the concept of play-to-earn is flawed and Metahunter is shifting to a participate-to-earn model that will fix the mistakes of P2E platforms.
P2E Games
One of the biggest names in the P2E gaming space is Axie Infinity, which is a platform that followed the CryptoKitties model. Players needed to purchase in-game pets known as Axies to play. Axies would then be used to either battle other Axies, or rented out to other users for a specific fee and amount of time. Axies could also be used to breed and create new generations of Axies that had unique combinations of traits and features depending on who the parents were.
When platforms like Axie Infinity first emerged, the concept of playing to earn in-game tokens that could be cashed out to cryptocurrency and other digital assets like NFTs, was something that was exciting and popular. Not only would players be able to participate in fun games online, but they could actually make money from it. The major push factor for many people was that smart and dedicated players would even be able to replace a full-time income by playing on these P2E platforms. Some top players even made enough to buy multiple properties.
Needless to say, the platforms were incredibly popular. But they weren’t without their flaws. Some of the largest and seemingly most successful platforms saw their prices skyrocket, adding fuel to the fire about making a good amount of money from playing the game. However, it didn’t last for many of them. The players who took on a more investment-focused or speculative mindset were not interested in the gaming aspect except as a way to earn money, meaning that they used the in-game economy much like the stock market.
Why P2E Games Fail
When a large number of people join a blockchain platform and pump a lot of money into it in a short amount of time, the numbers are going to look great. However, this also means that those with the investor or speculator mindset, who are just looking to make as much money as possible, are going to start cashing out and pulling out of the market as soon as they feel like it has maxed out its potential.
Take a look at the Axie Infinity numbers over the past year and it is clear that while the initial numbers looked great, the lack of investment into the platform for long-term sustainability just wasn’t there. This resulted in a lot of people spending a lot of money to get into the platform once it became popular, only to have the value of their digital assets decline just as rapidly as they had increased in previous months.
Most of the platforms that utilise P2E gaming as their main model are limited in the way that they provide opportunities for players to become invested in the platform for the long term. This means that, just like stocks, the ups and downs can be quick and severe.
